Staff Software Engineer

Reports to: VP Engineering

Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Vice President, the Staff Software Engineer will carry out or direct the development of complex and novel assignments including those requiring the development of new or improved products, techniques or procedures. The Staff Software Engineer will be responsible for the proper application of technologies and processes to our product offerings to ensure we create the highest quality and most reliable, innovative products on the market. They will regularly mentor and develop the knowledge base of other less seasoned technical professionals, and will stay abreast of new technology affecting the industry. The job will require extensive knowledge and experience in structured software architecture, design, and coding, as well as digital electronics, sensors, control algorithms and fault tolerant control systems.

Primary Objective:
With primary focus on software design, structure, and implementation, and a good knowledge of hardware design, the Staff Software Engineer is considered a technical authority in the development and deployment of the technologies needed to bring new and innovative products to market.

Position Responsibilities:
Responsibilities for this job will include: leading internal or external designs and evaluations that support the development of new and very advanced concepts in all areas of Quick Serve Restaurant functions including asset tracking, cooking, serving, and HACCP monitoring and reporting; developing and owning product technology strategy and design structure; assisting in creating product development and top-level product documentation to meet enterprise goals; designing and developing embedded software for both feasibility and final design; creating detailed design documentation and system analysis/performance assessments; creating detailed verification and validation plans; leading, developing and implementing design characterization or design verification strategy for efficient, complete, and robust testing through report completion and anomaly resolution or independently perform tolerance, error budget or other design analysis by extending or adapting existing methodologies; leading the establishment of design requirements from Voice of the Customer, and translate into objective and meaningful lower level engineering requirements including those of a complex or difficult nature using Agile and Iterative development methodologies; acting as the interface between the product development team and the legal team in areas of intellectual property landscape, invention disclosures, invention disclosure expansion and patent application filings; and, finally, assisting with conformance to (FAST.) design control policies to ensure product quality through the technical review of the work products of other team members and projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Requirements:

  • BSEE/CS or equivalent. BSEE + MSCS strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in developing low-level or embedded projects and 5+ years working in embedded SW creating platforms in Embedded Linux or Windows Embedded.
  • Strong problem solving, interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills
  • Excellent C and Java skills
  • Prior system level Linux programming or mobile device development experience
  • Self-motivated and work effectively across different functional teams
  • Experience with platform bring-up, multimedia subsystem, 2D/3D graphics or I/O peripherals is a plus; Linux or Windows Embedded device driver creation a plus
  • Excellent knowledge of networking protocols, especially 802.11 and 802.15.4
  • The ability to reduce an overwhelming amount of information into a few salient issues to focus on, with the ability to prioritize the most relevant from all other issues is necessary.
  • Experience with using defect tracking and configuration management system is desired.
  • Must place great value on continuous learning and building knowledge.
  • The ability to believe in her/his ability to successfully take on new and difficult challenges, question the status quo, and take risks is necessary.
  • Ability to adopt technologies and products, manufactured by others, into the FAST/SCK product offerings.
  • Supervisory/project/team management experience required.

Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Based in Stratford CT, FAST, Inc is the industry leader in the creation of custom and semi-custom control solutions for commercial kitchen equipment manufacturers. If you’ve ever eaten in a fast food restaurant, school cafeteria, or other eating establishment, chances are at some point the food was processed using one of our controllers.

Our Engineering Team has an immediate need for an experienced software engineer with the following qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or EE.
  • 5+ years experience.
  • Experience programming in C/C++ for embedded systems; Visual Basic and/or Java a plus.
  • Knowledge and skills in the use of real-time operating systems on embedded devices.
  • An understanding of quality development practices, including product design, code design, engineering techniques, etc.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to grasp new technologies and react to changes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good analytical and debugging skills.
  • Understanding of electrical systems a plus.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design and build embedded software applications for use on 8bit and 16bit microcontrollers, both individually and in collaboration with other software engineers.
  • Follow department standards and procedures for development of good software.
  • Utilize programming skills and knowledge in a variety of development environments.
  • Use various tools to test, debug and verify software designs.
  • Contribute new insight into methods of development, validation, and release of software.
  • Draw on skills for troubleshooting to solve problems.
  • Work hands-on with embedded circuits during the course of development of products.
